Even though the Tomatometer might seem as a good indication it is still flawed in how it is presented. RT takes reviews from critics all over the place and gives the movie a score based on the number of favored vs. unfavored reviews. So if 80 critics would recommend you seeing the movie and 20 critics didn't the movie gets a score of 80% on the tomatometer, simple and straight forward. Sounds good right? But here lies the problem with RT. because it is based on thumbs up, thumbs down you don't get any nuance of the critic.
A movie isn't either good or bad. You don't either love it or hate it. There is always a specter and that is what is missing from RT.
When you review a movie, lets say you give it a score from 1 to 10. At what score would you start to recommend the movie. 3, 5, 7? Some might say 3 others might say 7. So now you have the possibility of a movie having a high score on RT but the individual reviews might range from a 3 to a 10 amongst the positive reviews and from 6 to 1 amongst the negative ones. So in theory you could have two people giving the movie a 6, but one gives it a thumbs up and the other gives it a thumbs down. But let's say everyone buts the line at 5, below 5 is thumbs down, and from 5 to 10 is thumbs up. Now everyone would be in agreement on whether or not to recommend a movie, but now we run into a different problem.
If lets say 100 people reviewed a movie. 80 gave it a 5 and 20 gave it a 4,5. There is not much difference in the opinion about the movie, but on the tomatometer the movie would have a score of 80%. And lets say the same people saw another movie and this time 20 gave it a 5 and 80 gave it a 4,5. This movie would have a score of only 20%.
So on the tomatometer two movies that are more or less equally liked ends up on different sides of the spectrum because the tomatometer doesn't have nuance. One appears to be a very good movie, the other to be really bad, when in fact they are both just OK.
Now. I'm not saying you should disregard RT, but you should remember that just because a movie has a score of 95% doesn't mean that it is loved by everyone. it means that 95 out a 100 think this movie is good enough for you to see it...... whatever good enough means to them.
